#stilllifesmatter, will open at the Art Association of Oswego on Saturday, August 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. and will run until September 11.
Mr. Whalen is a North Country artist and teacher who lives in South Colton, just south of Potsdam on the Raquette River. He is a K-12 art educator in Parishville, NY and an adjunct professor of art at SUNY Potsdam. Ray Whalen studied painting and ceramics at SUNY Oswego and Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree. He has numerous art exhibitions and awards to his credit. He has also illustrated a number of children’s books and is the owner of Stone Valley Sign and Frame Shop in South Colton.
Ray’s daughter Eve is currently attending the University of New Hampshire for Environmental Studies and Animal Conservation. She took her first official drawing class last spring, but for years she has been painting side by side with her father. Eve grew up walking nature trails, exploring swimming holes, and spending summers on a lake in the Adirondacks. Both artists enjoy nature, but also draw great satisfaction and comfort from the meditative nature of working from a still life.
The Art Association of Oswego is located in Fort Ontario Park at the northernmost end of East 4th Street in Oswego. Regular gallery hours are from 10 am to 1 pm on Saturdays and from 1 pm to 4 pm on Sundays.
