This class will provide an in depth exploration into the possibilities of ceramic surface treatments. Interesting surfaces with lots of depth can enhance sculptural forms as well as functional pieces. I will teach students a variety of techniques including: stamping, underglazing, layering glaze, masking, overglazing and lusters, image transfer, decaling, and how to add mixed media elements post-firing. These techniques occur at all stages of the ceramic process. Students will be encouraged to take an experimental approach and to combine techniques to find their unique voice through surface treatments. This class would especially benefit intermediate to advanced ceramic students (so that they can apply the techniques to their own clay forms), but the class is open to beginners with no experience in ceramics as well.
